Children Portraits

"As soon as I saw you, I knew an adventure was about to happen!" - Winnie the Pooh

Indigo Images Photography Studio takes a natural approach to creating heirloom imagery for individuals and families.  We love to photograph you in real, meaningful settings that convey the essence of who you are and what you love.  We work hard to ensure the entire process is stress-free for our clients from start to finish, with the end result being beautifully crafted portrait prints and products to be treasured for many years to come.

We have been taking professional portraits since 2000 for a wide variety of clients.  Many of the people we photograph become our friends.  We completely and absolutely love what we do!

If this is your family's first time working with a professional photographer, it can be difficult to know what to expect.

What should I bring?

Will there be enough time to get the perfect portrait?

Will my child feel comfortable in front of the camera?

We completely understand the feelings of concern; you are not alone!  We are here to work for and with you to make your session as stress-free as possible.  Remember, this is supposed to be fun!

Our method of working is simple;  we tailor our photography to you and your family.  Each session is a unique experience, built from the ground up just for you.  In our initial consultation, we'll discuss things like the family schedule, favorite locations, and attention spans to make your photo day a smashing success.

This is your day to relax and enjoy your family;  we'll do the rest!

The initial consultation

Every session begins with an initial in-person consultation so we can get to know one another.   We love to meet over a cup of tea or coffee and learn more about you and your family, your goals for the portrait session, and ideas for decorating your home.  We also encourage clients to use this time for questions and ideas; and we love to show you our beautiful print products in-person to give you a feel for the final outcome of your session.

Booking a date

Once you've decided on the right photography package for your family, we will go ahead and get the date booked for your session!  In order to reserve your date, a non-refundable 30% package fee deposit and a signed contract are required.  We will work with your schedule to find a perfect date and time for the session.

Planning in advance is key to success!  If your family or child has a daily routine, it's best to schedule the portrait session in a way that works with, not against, this routine.  If your child has a certain nap time, we will plan the shoot to be either before or after she wakes up to prevent tantrums and fatigue.  If your baby generally sleeps during the afternoon, a morning session may be best.  We are here to make your session a success, and will work with you individually to find a time and place that fits with your family!

Portrait day

On the day of your session, we will meet at the agreed location and time and start working with your family to make them feel comfortable.  A portrait session can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours.  There's really no rush - or general time limit - just what feels natural.  It generally takes us about 30 minutes to 'warm up' together, meaning getting comfortable and feeling relaxed in front of (or behind) the lens.  After that, it is really up to your family as to how long the session will last.  This is the fun part!

If we have chosen an outdoor location for your portraits, we will most likely be at the mercy of the weather!

If the day turns out to be extremely hot, which can be dangerous and frustrating for the family, we will find an alternative date for the session.  Similarly, for rainstorms, snow or extreme cold, we would rather reschedule than push everyone into an uncomfortable place!  We will be in communication the day before and day of the session to discuss any challenges that may arise and deal with them in the most convenient way possible for your family.

Pacing ourselves

Children are unpredictable - a characteristic that makes them so lovable - but also difficult to plan around.  It is something we completely understand!  For this reason, we always carve out a large chunk of time to make sure your session isn't rushed.  If baby needs to be changed or fed, take your time.  If a toddler is getting tired or frustrated, we can take a snack break to relax and regroup.  If you and your family are feeling uncomfortable or exhausted, we can pause for a drink of water and a rest in the shade.  This is your portrait session and we will work at the pace of you and your family.  There's no need to rush - just relax and enjoy the experience with us.

Safety First

When working with babies and children, safety is our first priority.  When we photograph kids we make sure the site is safe and suitable for children ahead of time.  If there are questions as to whether or not a location, pose or prop is safe for your family, we will always err on the side of caution.  If mom or dad feels uncomfortable with a situation, we are happy to find alternatives to make sure everyone is safe and kept out of harm's way!

Keeping it positive

It can be difficult to get kids to cooperate in the best of circumstances, and many times they may feel uncomfortable with a photographer that they don't know well in an unfamiliar place.  We work hard to get those perfect poses, but never with negative reinforcement or discipline.  We use only positive, confidence-boosting methods to gain your child's trust and cooperation during the portrait session, and ask parents that they do the same.  We find that the best photographic results come from using kindness and patience!

Proofing and ordering session

The portraits have been taken, individually retouched with great love and care, and now it is time for you to see the end result of all your hard work and planning!  One on our clients' favorite parts of the entire Indigo Images Photography Studio experience is getting to view their beautiful portraits projected larger-than-life size in the comfort of our studio.

We will take this opportunity to view each portrait individually and you will have the chance to choose your favorites and order your prints, albums, canvases or select from a variety of other handcrafted photographic products offered.  You will take home a pricing guide and an online link with all your favorite choices to enjoy and share with your friends and family for a two week period, giving your loved ones an opportunity to order prints from your session.  Grandparents love this link - especially if they live out of town.

Picking out props

Props are any kind of object or thing included in photographs.  In general, props can add detail, interest and meaning to your images, especially when they hold sentimental value to your and your family.  Ideas include baby blankets or wraps, love letters, heirloom furniture, a vintage dress handed down in the family, old photographs, handkerchiefs, shoes, trophies, a suitcase, travel souvenirs, or anything else that is close to your heart.  We love working with props; if you have any questions or need ideas, just ask!

Ideas & inspiration: how to dress the little ones

One of the most frequently asked questions from our clients is what to wear on the day of the photoshoot!

We've put together this guide based on current trends as well as our own experience with what looks great on camera. If you have any questions or ideas of your own, we'd love to hear them! The process of planning and shopping for outfits is one of our clients'  favorite parts of their photography experience.

Pretty in PinkPretty in Pink

Solid fuschia pop tones look great set against polka dot or floral patterns.  Warm booties keep baby comfortable and happy! A simple flower headpiece adds an extra touch of cuteness magic!

Patterns and stripes always look great on camera.  Having a pop of color, such as a bright red against white and grey, adds depth and focal points.  Adding a small toy for baby to play with makes for fun photos and keeps the little guy entertained!

Bright red and baby are the classic color combinations - always a hit on camera - for little boys.  Add in some leather sandals, a favorite teddy bear, and a red balloon to complete the look.

Let your little lady be a princess for the day, complete with tutu, sparkle shoes and of course the crown!

Adding a prop such as this ribbon wand adds wonderful detail to your images and keeps the princess entertained!

We cannot wait to work with you!
